SEMINAR ON CHILD WELFARE
An engaging and interactive day-long seminar/ workshop on Child Welfare was organized by Kuturkonsulenten and Embassy of Pakistan on 11 April 2018. Mayor of Oslo Marianne Borgen inaugurated the seminar, which was attended by senior diplomats, representatives from child welfare department, Barnevern, Norwegian Police, municipal authorities, advocates, social workers, academics, psychologists and members of the Pakistani Community participated in the event. The seminar was concluded with remarks by H.E. Ambassador Riffat Masood.
Issues relevant to child welfare were discussed from the perspective of the public authorities as well as affected families. Legal, criminal and psychological dimensions of the issue of child welfare and first hand experiences were narrated by the speakers. It was highlighted that even though no system can be perfect, the child welfare system of Norway was meant to help, guide and support families with children. There was also a recognition of the need for regular dialogue and communication to help understand diverse points of view. But most important was the need to listen, especially to the needs of the children.
The seminar was organized on the growing request of the Pakistani Community in Norway whose several members have been directly or indirectly affected by child welfare issues. The seminar offered useful insight into these issues and brought different stakeholders at a common platform for meaningful and result-oriented discussions.
